The Experience

Smell the sea air as you drive into sleepy Ballantrae – a food store, a thrift shop, a good pub and lots of friendly locals. Windyknowe is the largest of these river-facing homes, while 1870s Stinchar, originally the toll house for the bridge, is the smallest. Dotted along a small road each cottage faces south and has a well-tended garden and a terrace, so sit out with a G&T, fire up the barbecue and drink in the peace. High Mains is enclosed for little ones, whilst Windyknowe – popular with fishermen – has a sheltered veranda. Inside this big attractive whitewashed house all is light, bright and inviting with a scattering of old and the very best of new. Find country scenes on pale walls, log fires for chillier evenings, refurbished and sleek bathrooms (fluffy white towels; soaps from Arran Aromatics), and books, games and country magazines – a ‘home from home’ without the clutter. Overseer of all this delight is Caroline, the perfect owner host. Rest and read, chat and chill, bring the dog – walks start from the door.

Reviews

Fabulous cottage, cosy and warm. Very clean and everything you need. Very dog friendly a utility room where you leave your walking boots and clean down the dog. A lovely log burner and very comfy chairs .

Paula, Wylam

It doesn't get any better than this. Our group of eleven rented both Castlehill and Windyknowe which sit side-by-side in an elevated position overlooking the River Stinchar, gardens, green pastures and a far-reaching view of the sea. There is a winding path through the lush gardens between the houses. (though not suitable for those with mobility issues.) Both houses have fantastic, well-equipped kitchens (an aga in Windyknowe) and bathrooms that make you want to take them home with you. Beautiful decors throughout. These properties are top notch. Highly recommended.

Local points of interest from Hamish & Emma Dalrymple

  • Can't be bothered to cook or want to spoil yourself? Local cook, Sue Marshall, will come and cook for you in the cottage or deliver something for you to pop in the oven. Ask for her contact details when booking.
  • Home of the oldest major - golfers are extremely well catered for in Ayrshire. From the Championship course at Turnberry (only 18 miles away) to the local courses at Stranraer and Girvan.
  • Minutes from the long dog-friendly beach - perfect for gentle strolls in the morning or watching the sunset over Ailsa Craig. Otherwise drop down onto the beautiful River Path for a walk and the dogs can enjoy a dip in the River.
  • Love the stars? Visit the Dark Sky Park at Galloway Forest Park (approx 40 miles) for an amazing experience on a clear night.
  • Foodies? Treat yourself to a truly sumptuous meal at Glenapp Castle (approx 2 miles) - a real experience in a fantastic setting.
