The Experience

If you want tarmac to the door, matching Ikea furniture and an absence of wildlife then this place isn’t for you. Adventurous souls will love the drive along narrow roads over cattle grids and through spectacular scenery.

Walk in to find deep window sills for gazing at the Rhinog mountains and swirling ravens, wind-blasted buzzards, sometimes a mountain goat. The sitting room has a fireplace at each end plus interesting paintings, local maps, hefty beams (you’ll spot the odd cobweb) and large rugs over ancient tiled floors – not for minimalist fusspots.

Gather round the old farmhouse table in the kitchen, light both fires and bring warm clothing; children will adore the hayloft which has its own extra outside steps. Llanbedr village is five miles down the winding road; the beautiful beaches of Shell Island offer safe swimming.

Reviews

With a family of three little ladies (7,11,13) we enjoyed blissful weather...On Sunday the weather was more inclement and so we stayed 'local' with the girls playing in the little ruins and stream and on the swing. Then, as evening closed in, we hunkered down with the fires roaring...Thank you Stephanie and John for letting us stay in your little slice of heaven... This family, like those that have been before and those that will follow, had a wonderful time. And we can't wait to return again one day!

Thank you so much for the rental of your cottage in July. We had the most wonderful time in such a special place and made some great memories. I have written in the visitors book but wanted to write to you directly to thank you for entrusting your cottage to us. It was our first proper family summer holiday and it was just as good as I could have imagined. Maybe more!

If you're seeking a truly wild escape and the call of the mountains, head to Nantcol. This beautiful cottage is crammed full of history and rustic charm, whilst it's lack of central heating and very remote location might not be right for everyone, for some it will be a Blissful escape haven! Pull on your boots and hit the hills form your doorstep, or drive 15 minutes to the beautiful wild beaches of the Snowdonian coastline.

I returned to Nantcol with my grandchildren for the first time since the 1950s. I had such fond memories of this delightful Welsh longhouse that the Grants have lovingly cared for over the past 70 years and it was just as I remembered with some mod cons including a luxury electric Aga in the kitchen. Wonderful beds. I had memories of a caste iron roll top bath-still there but now replaced with an acrylic roll top. The views remain the same and are breathtaking. What a heavenly peaceful place in this topsy turvey world. Thank you Grants for keeping Nantcol so special.

We have had the pleasure of staying in this special place several times now. It has become a retreat for the whole family when we need to escape city life and make time to appreciate the beauty of the natural world around us. Our children love the adventure of getting there up the mountain road and we all love the sense of freedom and peace that just emanates from the house and the setting it sits in. It's not a place for the faint hearted or for people who need the heating on high at all times ....but for us it's one of the finest places we've found.

Location

The neighbourhood

You’re surrounded by mountains and big skies. It's not the sort of place where it doesn't matter if you forget the milk - it's a (nearly) two hour walk to the village of Llanbedr which has a small shop and a pub. Walkers, nature-lovers and those who want peace and quiet will love it here and children will adore the freedom.

Local points of interest from Stephanie & John Grant

  • One hour from Snowdon.
  • Bodnant Gardens and Food Centre, a one and a half-hour drive.
  • Festiniog Railway or Portmeirion Italianate Village are both half an hour away.
  • Famous Roman steps, Rhinog mountains - all a walk from Nantcol front door..
  • Harlech Castle, six miles. Also award winning Ice Cream Parlour.
  • World's longest Tripwire ride and underground trampoline at Blaneau Festiniog. 1 hour away.

Introducing

Stephanie & John Grant

John's family discovered the cottage in 1945 while they were exploring the valley by pony and trap - they subsequently bought it for £250! It was likely built before 1200 and is John and Stephanie's much loved own holiday home. They live near Hay-on-Wye but leave you lots of information and a fascinating history of the house.
